Farooq "Snackman" Khushi joined the Tecumsehs during the 2003 season. Dragging along a fellow Royal Mail colleague Ruth. Having played years earlier when I was much slimmer, I was looking forward to playing again and showing the team what I can do.
No longer slim (normal or even slightly overweight), I noticed I couldn't run, no place in the outfield anymore, my skills therefore were suited to 3rd base.
As the softball league guide describes, the third base player will need good reflexes, since the ball is often hit hard in his/her direction. In my case it's too fat and slow to move out of the way and therefore giving the impression that I could actually play.
Waiting for a chance to play on 3rd base behind the legendary Craig "The Boy" Spence, it was fair to say, I didn't make much of a contribution to the Tecumsehs promotion success that year.
Since then, as the starting 3rd base player, I have suppressed the teams winning mentality and steered them towards relegation for 2 years running. So to avoid being found out as the bad luck charm of the team, I took over the long vacated role of Snackman. It's probably safe to say I'm the best "Snackman" in the league.
My favourite phrase I use in the Rose & Crown (with regards to their selection of snacks), "I would like one of everything please!"
Unfortunately it's become so popular, the staff tend to finish off the sentence before I can.
